Permissions
Screenshot Inbox asks for as little as it can, and each request maps to something you can see it doing.
Files and folders
Why: to read new screenshots from the folder macOS saves them to, and to move them into the app’s library so your Desktop stays clear.
Granted at: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Files and Folders → Screenshot Inbox. Enable the folder your screenshots go to — usually Desktop.
Without this the app can’t see your screenshots at all. It will keep running and tell you what’s wrong rather than failing silently.
Reminders (optional)
Why: only if you use Send to Reminders on a capture. macOS prompts the first time you try it.
Granted at: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Reminders.
Decline it and everything else works normally; that one menu item stops.
Screen Recording (optional, and not what it sounds like)
Why: to read the window title of the app you captured from, which makes the source filter more precise. macOS classifies window titles under Screen Recording.
Screenshot Inbox does not record your screen and has no screen-recording feature. If you decline, captures are still tagged with the source application’s name — you lose only the window title.
If you declined and want to change your mind
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security
- Choose the relevant category above
- Find Screenshot Inbox and turn it on
- Quit and reopen Screenshot Inbox
macOS sometimes needs the app restarted before a newly granted permission takes effect.
The permission was granted, then stopped working
This usually follows an app update or a rebuild. macOS ties permissions to the signed binary, and replacing the binary can reset the grant.
The fix is the same as above: re-enable it in System Settings and restart the app. Nothing in your library is affected — this is a permissions problem, not a data problem.
What Screenshot Inbox never asks for
- Full Disk Access. Not needed; folder access to your screenshot location is enough.
- Accessibility. The global shortcut uses a Carbon hotkey registration, which doesn’t require it.
- Network access. There is nothing to grant — see Privacy.
