What the built-in macOS tools does better

  • Free, already installed, and nothing to trust — it's Apple's own software.
  • Live Text reads text out of any image you have open, and it's very good.
  • The screenshot tool itself (⌘⇧5) is capable and fast.
  • Preview handles annotation and markup perfectly well for most needs.

Live Text reads one image. It doesn't search all of them.

This is the distinction that catches people out, so it's worth being precise about it.

Live Text works on an image you already have open. You found the screenshot, you opened it, and now you can select the text inside it. That's genuinely useful, and it's the half of the problem you weren't stuck on.

Spotlight indexes your screenshots by filename and date. Since macOS names them all Screenshot 2026-08-31 at 4.32.11 PM.png, that index tells you almost nothing about what's inside them. Searching for the error message you captured returns nothing.

So the gap is specific: nothing built into macOS lets you search across every screenshot you have ever taken by the text inside them. That's the entire reason this app exists.
